A Founding Note
We spend too much time making our tools work for us, and not enough time focused on the work itself. We move information between applications, hunt through tabs, recreate context, and repeat things our software should probably already understand. The tools are often excellent; it is the space between them where work breaks down.
We think that relationship should change. Software should do more than give us tools to operate. It should understand what we are trying to accomplish, coordinate the pieces around us, and do useful work on our behalf. We think compute should become active.
AI made software more capable. It did not automatically make work better.
AI has expanded what software can do, but it often arrives as another chat window, AI assistants, or an application that needs us to supply context, connect the pieces, and move its output somewhere useful. Individual tasks can become faster while the work around them remains fragmented. Putting AI inside the old way of working is not enough. The opportunity is to rethink the environment around work, so intelligence reduces the machinery we operate rather than adding to it.
Powerful technology should work for everyone.
Getting real value from AI should not depend on knowing how to connect models, code, and agents. Too often, the choice feels like powerful but complicated tools, or accessible features that only touch a small part of the work. We want to close the gap between what this technology can do and what people can actually put to use, without expecting everyone to become a developer or an AI expert.
Make work human again.
Desks, folders, notes, and windows gave work a sense of place. As more work moved online, much of that structure dissolved into tabs: documents, email, design, communication, and now AI. We gained easier access and collaboration, but still carry the burden of keeping everything connected. Making work human again means giving people back clarity, control, and room to think. Software should handle more of the coordination so we can focus on creating, deciding, collaborating, and doing the work itself.
Software should feel like yours.
We miss software with personality: recognizable interfaces, Winamp skins, and working environments people could make their own. Too much software now feels interchangeable, with the same white surfaces, gray navigation, and rounded cards. Consistency is useful, but it should not mean losing character or the freedom to customize. Serious software can be powerful and enjoyable. People should be able to shape not just what their software does, but how it looks and feels.
We want software that is:
- Active, capable of understanding context, coordinating actions, and doing useful work rather than simply waiting to be operated.
- Personal, able to adapt to the way you work instead of forcing you into someone else's workflow.
- Composable, where tools, information, intelligence, and workflows can naturally work together.
- Accessible, so powerful capabilities are available to ordinary people, not just those willing to become developers or AI experts.
- Delightful, because software we spend our lives using should have character, invite exploration, and sometimes even be fun.
- Magical, making things that once felt out of reach surprisingly easy, so people experience the power of AI through what they can actually accomplish.
What we are building
We are hard at work on our first product, bringing tools and context together, making repetitive work easier to automate, and helping people create, customize, and share capabilities shaped around their needs. Just as importantly, people should be able to see what the software has access to, understand what it is doing, and control how it acts on their behalf.
That is what Active Compute means to us. Active means software that understands context, adapts, coordinates, and acts rather than simply waiting to be operated. Compute is the foundation underneath: running applications, maintaining context, and continuing workflows in the cloud when needed, even when you step away. Together, they turn software from tools you constantly operate into systems that work for you.
